Built from the Puranas
Puranas, which means ancient, are part of the Hindu scriptures. They are explained as ‘that which breathed in old times’. They contain vast knowledge and ancient wisdom about various disciplines such as philosophy, history, geography, sociology, politics, literature, medicine, music, mythology, religion, etc. Often in Puranas, along with various mythological narrations, we find the descriptions of many intriguing places.
These places are diverse such as forests, gardens, cities, buildings, riverbanks, etc.
This book is an attempt to collate and document some of the places from Puranas through illustrations (hand-drawn) done by the author. The book does not deal with detailed accounts of dates and facts, and hence must not be considered as a reference to understand or interpret Puranas.
Piyush Das is an Architect with a specialization in Architectural Conservation from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. He has been active in research of significant cultural landscape sites such as Mathura, Kishangarh, Bhubaneswar, Chanderi, Mehrauli, Puri, Mahanadi Delta, coastal belt of Odisha, etc.
He is the author of the book Memory of a Stream: Sacred Cultural Landscapes of Ekamra Kshetra, Bhubaneswar. Presently, he is working as an Assistant Professor, Sushant School of Art & Architecture, Sushant University.
